After five hours of agonizing labor, Desertstorm now looked down to see six kittens suckling on her stomach. She smiled, they were so cute. They seemed so helpless and cute. She loved the feeling of the mothering instincts she had over them. All their eyes were closed, but she knew that they would soon open and she would see the adorable little eyes stare at her and she would stare back. She loved that feeling.
As she watched, she could certainly tell that they had her and thier father's looks. "That is a good thing. They won't be totally unfortunete looking. But she smiled. She bent her head to lick all of them, she couldn't stand the uncleanliness.
A picture of her dead 'mate' went through her head. She smiled. He really was a kind cat...he just wanted to have kits to call him his own. He didn't care at all about her. But that didn't matter. She also wanted to give new warriors to her clan. After all they did for her...she knew she could give her kits to them and know they would like it. She was even happy to see them grow up, and become warriors. She knew Emuclaw, their father, would also be proud.
As she looked at the kits, the tom went through her head again.
Then she looked at her new sons and daughters, deciding what to name them. She loved this part. The feeling of giving them a name worthy for themselves. She thought, and slowly went over them.
This one was hard. She was so beautiful...it was too hard to choose. She finally chose Phobekit. It was pretty bird, and it was a beautiful name.
On to the next one. This one was a tom. She thought after a while, and named him Ernekit. Another bird. She decided she needed to go a little to her own name, not Emuclaws'.
The next one was another tom, the last tom. Since he was a tom, she decided to stay with one more bird. She already had one in mind. Oriolekit. A perfect name for a calico.
All the others were she-cats. That's good. Less trouble. she thought. Just one more bird. She didn't care. She really liked the sound of it.
Anikit. Just perfect.
That was the last bird. The last two were females, so she went with names familiar with her own. Galekit, it was very pretty.
The last kit. She pursed her lips...what to name her? She didn't look much like any of her siblings. She was smaller and more lean. Monsoonkit. It was a perfect name. Different, just like her.
She went over them. How could you love someone so much you just met? She curled them in more close. Her own kits, her own kin. Her pride and joy.
Phobekit, Ernekit, Oriolekit, Anikit, Galekit, and Monsoonkit. Her love was not even longer than her body. But that was perfect size, it made her heart just get bigger.
